Condé Nast Traveller, in partnership with the Greek National Tourism Organisation, invites you to step back in time at our latest Traveller’s Tales event with historian, author and broadcaster Professor Bettany Hughes OBE. The talk will take place at London’s smart Beaumont hotel, in a room named after The Lotos Club in New York – one of the oldest literary clubs in the USA.

Hughes will be in conversation with a Condé Nast Traveller editor to talk about her travels, inspirations and her latest book. They will be discussing the splendours of Ancient Greece and the history of one of its most famous goddesses.

Hughes is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster, specialising in ancient and medieval history and culture. She has created and presented more than 50 TV and radio documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, Netflix, National Geographic, ITV and many more. Her BBC Radio 4 series The Ideas That Make Us explores the influential concepts that have shaped civilisation. Her books have appeared on the New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller lists and The Hemlock Cup, Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life was shortlisted for the Writer’s Guild Awards. In 2019 she became Chair of the Man Booker International Prize for Fiction and was awarded an OBE for her services to history.

Travellers Tales with Bettany Hughes

For our Traveller’s Tales, she’ll be discussing her latest book, Venus and Aphrodite; History of a Goddess. The book is a biographical exploration of the ancient goddess Venus and the many representations she has taken throughout history. Hughes uses ancient art, myths, archaeology and philosophy to uncover Venus as a multi-faceted mythological being that continues to appear to 21st-century popular culture.

Prior to the discussion, guests are invited to a drinks reception with canapés. Each guest will also receive a copy of Venus and Aphrodite; History of a Goddess, with an opportunity for signing after the talk.
