The insider Stoke Newington neighbourhood guide

"Чтобы проникнуть в сущность заурядных явлений, требуется весьма незаурядный ум." Альфред Норт Уайтхед ©

Dalston’s sleepier neighbour, Stoke Newington is Hackney’s village-like quarter. Along the main strip of Church Street, boho cafés and restaurants jostle for attention among curated homeware stores and lovely little florists. These spots have been drawing queues of locals for years; quietly inspiring loyal cult-followings that have kept the neighbourhood’s buzz going strong – our favourite addresses that are worth crossing town for.

    THE GOOD EGG

BEST FOR: A LONG LAZY BRUNCH

This Church Street staple became so well-known as a pilgrimage for living-for-the-weekend east Londoners that it spawned a Soho offshoot. But the N16 spot is still the best, emulating a Brooklyn deli with its whitewashed brick walls and mismatched jars of fresh flowers on every surface, and with a dinky garden out back. Go for the phenomenally popular brunch and order Middle Eastern favourites: start with white peach and labneh with dukkah, loaded onto bread from local bakery The Dusty Knuckle. Follow up with a round-the-world trip through Jewish-style cooking, from the Jerusalem Plate (fudgy eggs, north African merguez sausage, house-made pita) to a Montreal Reuben pita (house-smoked short rib pastrami with apple and dill kraut). On Tuesdays, head for supper and the BYO night in partnership with neighbour Borough Wines – there’s no corkage fee.

    JOLENE

BEST FOR: SUPERIOR BREAD AND BUTTER

Not a Dolly Parton-themed bar, but an all-day bakery and restaurant that takes its organic, local ethos more seriously than most. Flour is milled onsite for morning dishes of toast with fried eggs and Spanish-style ham or cinnamon buns to grab and go. For supper, order nests of silky tagliatelle with rich veal and pork ragu, or leg of lamb so soft it could be eaten with a spoon, served with braised green beans and tomatoes.

Address: Jolene, 22 Newington Green, London N16 9PU

    LUMINARY BAKERY

    BEST FOR: SWEET TREATS

This is a cake shop with a conscience: it offers six-month training courses for women with backgrounds of abuse, poverty or gender-based disadvantage, teaching them about all areas of the business. The N16 headquarters and café has glossy chessboard floors and is dotted with peeling watering cans filled with sunflowers. Visitors are drawn straight to the counter groaning with treats: sticky cinnamon buns, gooey salted-caramel brownie bars and pillowy cheese scones. Drop by on the last Sunday of the month for afternoon tea.

Address: Luminary Bakery, 71-73 Allen Road, Stoke Newington, London N16 8RY

    ESTERS

BEST FOR: BREAKFAST WITH A TWIST

Expect to queue at this much-loved neighbourhood café – its unusual breakfasts draw yummy mummies and hungover hipsters alike in search of strong, smooth coffee (from Hasbean) and a menu that won’t cause bankruptcy in the name of avocado toast. Once stationed at one of the handful of tables, try creamy house-made yoghurt topped with spoonfuls of crunchy muesli and hazelnuts and sprinkled with apricot-lemon verbena (a herb that tastes like lemongrass), or French toast with peanut brittle and dollops of tart lemon ricotta, drizzled with blood orange.

    ORIGINAL SIN

    BEST FOR: GROWN-UP COCKTAILS

The little sister to Hoxton’s Happiness Forgets (currently number 35 on the World’s 50 Best Bars list) crowds discerning drinkers into its dappled-leather booths to sip on classy cocktails. Drinks draw on old-school liqueurs – you’re just as likely to find vermouth and apple brandy in the ingredients as gin or vodka. Order a plate of charcuterie or creamy chicken liver paté with toast and cornichons to soak up the (pretty strong) drinks and kill time at the 1950s-style pool table, which is free to play. Drinks are surprisingly well-priced, and during the daily happy hour cocktails are only £6.50.

    RUBEDO

BEST FOR: AN ALL-NATURAL WINE LIST

Rubedo is known for its all-natural wine list (now the hallmark of a Stokey restaurant), curated to include handmade wines – many without added sulfites produced by makers the owners know personally. The food is as unadulterated as possible too, and a simple, seasonal Italian menu is scrawled on chalkboards nightly. Grab a wooden chair in the homely, exposed-brick dining room and order hunks of flaky, salty focaccia, tender asparagus with tangy goat curd and lemon, or octopus with jersey royals and broad beans.

    ROMEO & GIULIETTA

    BEST FOR: GELATO SNOBS

On sunny days this former greengrocer’s draws local foodies in their hordes with its authentic, traditional gelato. All the usual suspects are on offer – extra-dark chocolate, caffeinated tiramisu, sharp mango sorbet – but we recommend going slightly off-piste: the ricotta ice cream is drizzled with goopy, sticky caramelised fig and the tart black cherry praline is a vegan option that’s so good you won’t miss the cream. Best of all, every cone is topped with a second, mini cornet – ideal for use as an edible, sustainable scoop.

    THE HABERDASHERY

BEST FOR: A SERIOUS CAFFEINE HIT

The cracked-tile walls and scrubbed wooden floors at The Haberdashery give the feel of walking into an old-school European café: grand in its day but weathered with time, a Sicilian transplant landed in the middle of Stokey. Locals jostle among the eclectic furniture with what can only be described as bowls of Nude Espresso coffee: enormous mismatched crockery is a trademark here. Equally as tasty is the Italian hot chocolate – order the white variety and top it with marshmallows.

    THE GREEN ROOM

Is it a florist? Is it a café? The Green Room is a deliciously mellow combination of the two. In the front room, browse easy-to-care-for plants and pretty bunches of flowers in the family-run flower shop. Step up the uneven stairs to the café, where there’s a vegetarian-heavy menu (order the creamy chestnut mushroom and spinach crêpe) and a teeny sun-trap patio to take over.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN STOKE NEWINGTON

    Abney Park Cemetery

Gothic and undeniably a little eerie, Victorian Abney Park Cemetery is, yes, an unexpected spot for a walk – but a lovely one, too. It’s overgrown and wild, with unruly, gnarly trees and a blanket of gold and red leaves falling in autumn. The cemetery runs free history walking tours, as well as summer theatre and live-music performances.
