Previously overlooked for its neighbouring nightlife scene and known only for a 230-acre cemetery, leafy Chacarita is suddenly Buenos Aires’ most exciting restaurant destination. Here are the best places to eat in this foodie neighbourhood.

    Alegra Restaurante y Vinería

Two friends – both cooks and sommeliers – scramble free-range eggs and whip up brick-thick toasted ham-and-cheese sandwiches at this pretty corner spot. Take a seat by the lofty sash windows to watch the people of the neighbourhood amble by or share the communal table in the sky-blue annex with freelancers sipping cafés con leche.

    Ajo Negro

The seafood small plates here are best eaten while sitting at the striking industrial open kitchen, which is constructed from scaffolding pipes. Hits include squid al pil pil (made with garlic, olive oil and chilli salsa) and tiradito (Peruvian sashimi) cured in beetroot juice. The seasonal menu includes tapas specials on rotation but the catch of the day with chickpeas and patatas bravas is always a safe bet.

    Falena

This distressed-brick bookstore used to be the home of conceptual artist Leandro Erlich and now houses a cool café in the living room. Owner Marcela Giscafré’s literature selection is spot on: a mix of classic and contemporary non-fiction, plus art and design titles. And the urban-jungle terrace is a wonderful insider hangout for a glass of Teho Malbec and an artisanal cheeseboard.

    Roll’in Luí

There’s a burgeoning vegetarian scene in the steak-loving city and this little sandwich shop is helping to lead the charge. Queue up with the local creatives on their lunch breaks to bag one of the killer falafel wraps, loaded with tahini sauce, and a zingy homemade lemonade.

    La Fuerza

Vermouth is the city’s new craft beer and La Fuerza is stocked with Torrontés- and Malbec-based versions on tap. Hipsters hog the wrought-iron tables outside, ensuring their tipple goes further with a soda syphon on the side. Nibble on juicy beef empanadas to keep you going until supper.

    El Imperio de la Pizza

Do as the locals do and end the evening with a whopping slice of pizza. Not exactly a new kid on the block (unlike its Chacarita neighbours), this standing-room-only shop has been making pizzas since 1947. The cheese and onion fugazzeta is a crowd pleaser, paired with a foamy chopp (glass of lager).
