r/aww – When older bro turns head suddenly, so does little bro

For fun I used to turn my head really fast and be like “whassat?!” And my bordercollie/lab would take that so seriously and try to figure out what I heard. So cute. She was great at playing hide and seek, nothing would distract her from finding me. I always loved the super determined look she would have.

Edit: I gotta say this is my most upvoted comment on here and I’m so glad. Reading all the stories people have of their beloved fur families has made me happy today.

I love doing that! My lab/Aussie has somehow associated the word hello with my MIL (probably because every time we go there she greets us with a very distinct HelllOOoooo!) So now, we could just be chilling at home while he’s half asleep on the floor and I say “Helloo!” And he will immediatly pop up to attention and suspiciously “booof.boooof.” for a couple seconds and then go back to sleep.

Ah the ol whassat. Many a good times with family dogs and saying that. I thought we were the only ones haha

We did the same thing with our dogs when I was a kid. super fun

I did this with my dog (flat coat retriever) growing up until it locked onto my neighbor and started barking and freaking out thinking I felt threatened or something, neighbor was far away in their yard but I didn’t do it outside after that

My grandparents had a border collie who when you said “gogetthebunnies!!” she’d run the same track around the shed for 10 minutes at least. Apparently she caught a bunny there one time years and years before. Loved that dog

Lmao I do the “whooosedat!??” With my doggo Argentino. She expects like 29 mins of cuddling after a job well done tho

Even my shih tzu used to react very seriously if I turned my head like I saw something that was not there. I think it puts them on high alert because they didn’t hear anything but we did, so they must be like “how did I possibly miss something my human noticed?” And puts them on extra high alert.

my dog always runs to look out the window at the front of the house. I can whassat and look to the back yard but he just looks at me like I’m trying to trick him and runs to the front.

I do the exact same thing. I don’t know how true it is but I really believe that he believes I can hear things that he can’t in the same way he’ll dart a look towards a noise that I can’t hear. We’re a team giving call outs like “Hey I heard something over there, it’s pretty far away but just but just be on high alert”

Border collies or similair breeds are a favourite dog of search and rescue teams, at least in the uk.

“IF I DONT FIND HIM HE’LL DIE!!! He got LOST inside his own home. He’s hopeless!”

What a smart pup to pick up on the human body signals! I love his derpy face at the end.

I used to do some winter hiking and climbing, often in the dark. Every now and then we’d stop and be completely still and silent. Our dog would follow our lead and use his super senses to check if we were still safe and alone. After e few seconds of smelling and listening he’d start wandering and dogging again. That was when we knew everything was ok. What a machine he was. Dogs are great.
