We here at r/pics are always trying to make the subreddit better for you, our beloved subscribers. So we got to thinking about what holds this subreddit back. The CSS is pretty, the content is nice, and the community is outstanding. Then it hit us: data is by far our biggest challenge.
A direct effect a running a subreddit dedicated to sharing pictures online is the excessive data usage it causes for both users and site owners! Data can also be expensive for mobile users with monthly limits. As more and more people browse reddit on mobile devices we feel it is unfair for us to pass the cost of data transfer to our end users.
Our solution is a time tested Internet standard:
That’s right! To solve the big data issue we have decided to revert back to the days of terminals and dial-up, when the amount of data being transferred was much, much lower.
Of course, with this change comes some new rules:
