New York pulsates with energy and dynamism from morning till night. Manhattan’s thrilling core takes centre stage; it’s a melting pot of high and low culture, great monuments and world-renowned museums, impressive architecture and game-changing galleries. Each enclave has its own culturally rich quirks, from the neon-lit buzz of Broadway to the colourful streets of Chinatown, the cobbled streets of Greenwich Village and the cool, green, calm of Central Park. With a slew of hot hotel and restaurant openings, Brooklyn is now also a New York destination in its own right, with the once-overlooked borough of Queens snapping at its heels. It all makes NYC a hectic metropolis of epic proportions – and a brilliant city break.

Best ways to get around: Manhattan is easy to navigate on foot thanks to the grid layout of the streets, and walking is the best way to take in the sights. The subway is cheap, fast and runs 24/7, but can be a bit of a minefield to navigate. If you’re travelling further afield than Manhattan, the NYC ferry (ferry.nyc) links it with Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.
