Travel Anywhere (And Avoid Being a Tourist)

No one wants to be pegged as a tourist (fanny packs and crew socks are never fashionable, end of story), and luckily you don’t have to. Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati — the founders of Fathom, a website by and for travel enthusiasts — tap into their own experiences on the open road, as well as their network of chefs, innkeepers and other creative types, to provide advice to anyone who has ever been intimidated by unfamiliar places. (Sample tip: When in the cloud forests of Nicaragua, let the howler monkeys be your morning alarm.) Not only does their book inspire the great explorer hidden inside all of us, but it also highlights some of the things each of us can do to become more ethical travelers and global citizens.

What We’re Reading

“Travel Anywhere (and Avoid Being a Tourist),” by Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati, is a snackable compendium of experiences from Fathom. It gives us a list of the great food halls of the world (L.A.’s Grand Central Market makes this list), suggests hostels that don’t look or act like hostels and offers ideas on where to get into hot water (think hydrothermal experiences). This is a book to keep (secretly) on your desk for a Monday when the freedom of a weekend still makes all destinations seem possible.

Fathom Founders’ New Book, “Travel Anywhere (And Avoid Being a Tourist)”

By Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati—the duo behind the popular travel website Fathom Travel Anywhere (and Avoid Being a Tourist) is a 192-page guide to exploring places without interrupting them. Gerba and Rosati started Fathom in 2011 to make the wonderful places they’d been to or wished to visit more accessible through intimate storytelling, product tips and personal anecdotes. The culmination of all of that led them to make this book, an extension (but also a standalone project) of the website.

The Must-Read Books of Summer 2019

Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati, the founders of the popular travel website Fathom, put forth the appealing theory in their new book that traveling well is a skill we can all learn and that doing so will benefit both us and the places we go. The volume provides smart itineraries for people who are interested in food, beaches, volunteering, and much more. But equally important, it offers advice on to how to immerse oneself in a new place without changing it in the process.

Travel News and Notes

Are you a tourist or a traveller? The authors of this guide to “travel trends and destination inspiration for the modern adventurer” say the tourist travels for pleasure, content to skim the surface; the traveller is determined to get a glimpse of life as a local in a foreign place. Appealing very much to the latter, Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati, founders of the Fathom website, give the lowdown on topics such as the places everyone will be talking about; the joy of getting your nose out of your phone; volunteer opportunities; and hostels that look like boutique hotels, as well as the world’s most romantic hotels (Longitude 131 at Uluru rates a mention). Plus there are some essential travel tips (“make friends wherever you go”) and favourite products; $29.99.

Holiday Weekends. Friends in the Hamptons Forget to Send the Chopper for You?

You do not want to open “Travel Anywhere” if you have been drinking or toking. First, you will turn down the corners of pages of destinations, hotels and restaurants that are particularly appealing. Then you will go to the Web to see what it costs to go there. And then, if you are sufficiently blitzed, you will grab a passport and rush to the airport.

Ovation Partners with Travel Website Fathom on Curated Trips

Ovation president Jack Ezon said the partnership was a natural fit. He considers Fathom to be a leader in the travel space, one that attracts the kinds of clients Ovation usually works with but who haven’t worked with agents before. Ezon also likes Fathom’s style, which is “about being approachable and relevant luxury.” As he described it, “You know, sometimes you want to wear a Gap shirt with a Chanel belt. … Fathom gets it.”

Travel Pub Fathom Uses Attribution Tech To Prove That Its Content Packs A Punch

Using Curacity, Fathom proved that three of its reviews of five-star properties in New York and Chicago helped generate more than $200,000 in direct booking revenue for those properties. “Digital journalism isn’t an easy business to be in — you put your work out there and you don’t always know what impact it has, especially in terms of monetization,” Rosati said. “Now, attribution is becoming a part of how we talk to hotels, and it’s because we can say to them, ‘We’re actually able to measure this.'”

Pavia Rosati of Fathom Will Take You Places Without Leaving NYC

Cue the birth of Fathom. Designed to allow readers to, “indulge in a passion for travel,” it’s no wonder that a peek into Rosati’s apartment reveals her enthusiasm for travel. “Almost everything here has a travel story,” she says as my eyes bounce from souvenir to practical baubles — collectible mementos that seem to signify more than just an “item.” I catch Rosati on her work-from-home day (always Thursday), with Napa in her recent rearview and Mexico on the horizon. She turns up the low hum of Van Morrison and sits back on a burnt orange chair, aligned next to a table scattered with globes and magazines — fitting.

Fathom Travel Site Taps Kate Spade to Guide You Through Your Next Vacation

There are plenty of travel sites out there, but have you ever noticed that almost all of them help you get where you’re going and then leave you all alone in the dark once you actually arrive there? What spots are must-see, what food is must-eat, and which shops do you absolutely have to pop into? There really isn’t a great way to efficiently and reliably plan out a trip itinerary on the web, except of course for the new travel site and service, Fathom. And thanks to a new partnership with Kate Spade, Fathom is about to get a whole lot more fashionable.
