Escape Routes Podcast: Lagos, Nigeria

"Самопожертвование должно преследоваться по закону. Оно деморализует тех, ради кого идут на жертвы." Оскар Уайльд

Growing up as a child in Surrey, Saro-Wiwa had been sent back to the West African country of her birth every summer by parents ‘hell-bent on neutralising my Britishness’. Then in 2012, she went on a four-and-a-half-month odyssey for her book Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria.

For this latest tale she returns to Lagos and discovers a booming city: ‘While its appeal is often overshadowed by infamy, it had been shining at the centre of its own universe long before the west began to take notice,’ says Saro-Wiwa, ‘a place with a vision of itself and where it wants to be.’
