Visas: EU citizens may live and work in England, free of any immigration controls. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are generally allowed to stay six months without a visa. Public holidays: New Year’s Day; Good Friday; Easter Monday; Early May, Late May and Summer (Aug) Bank Holidays; Christmas Day; Boxing Day. Good buys: Stock up on tea and typically British labels like Burberry, Daks and Aquascutum. Harrods and Marks & Spencer are also popular shops. Local dishes: Fish and chips, bangers and mash, steak and kidney pie, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, rhubarb crumble and custard, bread and butter pudding and summer pudding (including raspberries, blackberries, black currants). Curries are also very popular in Britain. Good reading: Serious Anglophile Bill Bryson’s Notes From a Small Island is an amusing account of the American travel writer’s tour of England.
