The Sharjah desert’s terracotta sands blur in the early-morning heat of the Arabian sun: a poolside view framed by rusted-steel butterfly shutters. Only high sky seems to sit upon the undulating dunes, though concentrate and the minarets of village mosques are pencil-etched beyond.

    There is nothing else here but this mirage-like concrete box: a new hotel and spa in the UAE with a Himalayan-salt therapy suite and stargazing skylights. It’s the last thing passing camel caravans expect to find, an hour east of Dubai, on the lonely Al Faya Road.

    In the 1960s this mountainside plot was a remote pit stop, a dusty drive-through place with a BP petrol pump, grocery store and clinic housed in two single-storey buildings. Slowly abandoned over decades, they were destined for dereliction until, in 2016, government developers commissioned a retreat unlike anything the UAE had seen before: one fit for Sharjah’s new status as art biennial host and, this year, UNESCO’s World Book Capital.

    An architect, the Dubai-based masters of modernist integration, were called in to upcycle Al Faya’s cement blocks into a five-room lodge and a terrace restaurant. Rather than camouflage the original functional design, principal Jonathan Ashmore embraced it. The weathered petrol pump remains as a symbolic artefact in the forecourt, its vivid auburn oxidisation echoed in the corten-steel panelling. Isolation and authentic sense of place are the selling points here. The anti-hotel to the high-rise chains hemming the emirate’s shoreline, Al Faya Lodge is a pioneer: the first in a new breed of boutique design hotels in Sharjah.
