Города, как и люди, имеют свою биографию. У иных она долгая и громкая. Участь других - провинциальный неспешный отсчет времени. Год за годом, век за веком их строения, превращаясь в памятники архитектуры, следят за сменой поколений своих жителей.
Биография Змеиногорска начиналась громко. Город был основан в 1736 году как промышленный поселок при месторождении полиметаллических руд. Это был город-рудник и город-крепость. Своим рождением он обязан открытию демидовского рудознатца Федора Лелеснова. Вот как писатель и краевед Петр Бородкин описывает это событие в своей книге "Тайны Змеиной горы":
"Не день и не два рудоискатели шарили в старых чудских копях. При свете факела изломы горных пород поражали глаз разнообразием своих форм, цветов и рисунков. Сине-дымчатые и серовидные струеватые роговики поблескивали вкрапленными кварцевыми жилками, слюдяными глазками и горными хрусталиками. Разноцветные и разнотонные шпаты, кварцы и мергели были украшены тонкими веточками горной сини, лазури, медной зелени, пятнами багрово-красной и желтой охры.
